## Opening passage

I tighten my grip on the reins, desperate to preserve the Republic’s honor without sacrificing the legions who built it. Before me, the Rubicon’s dark, silty current churns against the stone embankments, a boundary that marks the end of my governorship and the beginning of treason. My horse snorts, hot breath misting in the winter dusk as the copper taste of bile rises in my throat. Across the shallow bank, the Senate’s shadow looms like a closing iron fist. One command breaks the law, and the silence of the camp is the only thing standing between peace and the ruin of Rome.
