## Opening passage

Daniel clutched the heavy bronze scroll of the Law, his heart hammering against his ribs as he sought to defy the king's new decree. Outside his upper room, the scent of charcoal smoke and expensive frankincense drifted from the palace gardens, yet the shadows in the corner seemed to lengthen with predatory intent. He pulled the velvet curtains tight against the street's gaze, but the insistent scratching of a scroll-seal behind the door marked the trap closing. He knelt upon the cold stone floor.
