July 20, 1969. You are Michael Collins, orbiting the Moon alone in the Command Module while Armstrong and Aldrin descend. Then your radio crackles with the words you feared: 'Eagle has a problem.' An abort is possible. A rescue is possible. But so is landing successfully — if someone makes the right call in the next 12 minutes. That someone is you.

## Cast

- Michael Collins (The Command Module pilot orbiting alone with an impossible decision)
- Neil Armstrong (The mission commander descending toward the lunar surface)
- Gene Kranz (Flight Director in Houston — the man who will not lose another crew)

## Opening passage

I need to ensure the Command Module remains a perfect tether for my friends, yet the silence of the far side of the moon feels like a physical weight pressing against the pressurized glass. The rhythmic tick of the navigation computer vibrates through my gloves, syncing with the metallic tang of recycled oxygen in my lungs. Static ruptures the quiet, followed by Buzz's voice, strained and clipped. Eagle is drifting off trajectory with a failing primary guidance link. If I burn the maneuver rockets now, I can force a rendezvous, but I will forfeit my ability to maintain our extraction orbit. If I wait for the ground controllers to regain signal, the distance between us may become insurmountable.
