How Story Ants Works

You pick a story and a goal, read a passage, then choose what happens next — your choice generates the following passage, so the story branches as you read. It runs in the browser on any device, needs no install, and is free to read every path that already exists.

Reading a story

Open any story and press Play. You are offered a goal — a mission, a relationship or an outcome to chase — and you decide at each passage whether to follow it, abandon it or gamble. Choices are typed in your own words or picked from the ones offered.

What happens when you choose

The engine first checks whether your choice matches a path someone has already taken. If it does, you read that passage — instantly, at no cost. If it does not, the passage is written for you, checked against the story's canon record and the facts your run has established, and then kept, so the next reader who makes the same choice gets it immediately.

That is why the library gets deeper as it is played: readers build the story graph together.

Explore mode

When the day's generation budget is spent, or you are not signed in, the site switches to Explore mode — every path that already exists stays open and free. Signing in lets you open a brand-new path.

Your run

The site remembers what you did: the passages you read, the facts your run established, and how far you drifted from the original record. You can go back to an earlier decision, change it, and follow the story somewhere else.

Goals and difficulty

Relaxed lets you wander; challenging makes the goal harder to hold. Nothing is permanently lost — a failed goal is a different story, not a dead end.
